Lake Michigan Carferry has been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Wisconsin State Energy Office
to begin the engineering work for converting the S.S. Badger from coal to LNG, and has enlisted
G.R. Bowler to help.
The S.S. Badger will be the first steam ship in the USA to refuel with LNG. She entered service in 1953 and plies a regular Lake Michigan route between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wisc. from mid-May to mid-October. This 410-foot vessel, can carry 180 cars and 600 passengers. LMC is under pressure to reduce emissions and to eliminate the lake disposal of coal ash. LMC decided to refuel with LNG and not repower because it was the most cost effective clean fuel solution.
